How to Delete or Deactivate Instagram: Current Steps

Content updated:

Instagram allows you to deactivate your account temporarily or request permanent deletion. Both options are managed through Meta’s Accounts Center. The older process involving a separate Instagram Help Center deletion form is no longer the most reliable navigation path. If you only want to take a break, choose deactivation instead of deletion.

How to Permanently Delete Your Instagram Account

  1. Sign in to the Instagram account you want to delete, in the app or a browser.
  2. Open Settings and activity or the equivalent settings menu, then go to Accounts Center.
  3. Choose Personal details → Account ownership and control → Deactivation or deletion.
  4. Select the correct Instagram account or profile and choose Delete account.
  5. Read the on-screen consequences and follow the confirmation and identity-verification prompts.

The menu names may change with Meta app updates. Check that you have selected the correct profile if you have multiple accounts in the same Accounts Center.

How to Temporarily Deactivate Instagram

Follow the same route through Accounts Center but select Deactivate account instead. Deactivation hides your profile until you reactivate it by logging in. It is better suited to a temporary break than requesting deletion.

Download Your Instagram Information First

Before deletion, use the account information/export options in Accounts Center to request a copy of photos, videos and other data you want to retain. Export time and availability can vary. You may lose access to the export option after deletion is completed; check what the service confirms before proceeding.

Can You Undo an Instagram Deletion?

Meta may provide a cancellation period before the deletion becomes final; the exact time and terms can depend on your region and the service’s current policy. Review the deadline on Instagram’s confirmation screen. Permanent deletion is different from deactivation, and you should not assume the account can be recovered afterwards.

What About Messages, Copies and Connected Accounts?

Deleting an account does not guarantee that recipients will lose messages or copies they already received or saved. If the account is connected to Facebook or other Meta products, inspect Accounts Center carefully to avoid selecting the wrong account. Update any websites or services that use Instagram sign-in before losing access.
